It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet.

It was already one in the morning; the rain pattered dismally against the panes, and my candle was nearly burnt out.

the premise

noted

you have read every word of this and will keep about four of them. that is the problem, not a failing.

you read more than ever, and remember less than ever. ghostreader keeps the living thread between the page in front of you and everything you have read before.

see it read

it reads over
your shoulder.

the marked phrases below are live. touch one and the ghost comes to that line — the same gesture the app is for, on a real page, right here.

frankenstein · chapter vmary shelley · 1818

It was on a dreary night of November that I beheld the accomplishment of my toils. With an anxiety that almost amounted to agony, I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet.

His limbs were in proportion, and I had selected his features as beautiful. Beautiful! Great God! His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; but these luxuriances only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes and shrivelled countenance.

I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation; but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.

Unable to endure the aspect of the being I had created, I rushed out of the room, and continued a long time traversing my bed-chamber, unable to compose my mind to sleep.

reading itself

public-domain passage · four real capabilities, performed · nothing here is a video

what it does

reading, with someone.

not a chatbot bolted onto a reader. the questions happen where you are already looking.

kept

three things, today, on the build you can download. the rest of the page is careful about the difference.

  • ask with the page attached

ask about a line, a book, or the whole shelf. every answer carries the exact source passage back with it, so you can check the reading for yourself.

  • read, mark, or listen

keep colour-coded highlights, ask about the line in front of you, get a chapter overview, or have the book read aloud when your hands are busy.

  • bring anything

epub, pdf, markdown, or a link to an article. on iphone and ipad the share sheet sends a page straight to the shelf.

not yet

four things, in review.

these are finished and submitted to apple in ghostreader 1.1. they are not in the build you can download today, and the page will not pretend otherwise until they are.

asked

when apple says so. that is the honest answer and it is the reason these are down here rather than up there.

  • a private reading memory

highlights, notes, claims and the connections between them become a source-backed graph that belongs to your account — quotations stay distinct from your notes and the machine’s inferences.

  • book studio

build literature reviews, evidence tables, comparisons, maps, reading plans, outlines and briefs from passages you choose. every artifact keeps its citations and version history.

  • the original, offline

download the actual epub or pdf for reading, search and bookmarks without a connection. explanations and newly generated studio work still wait for the network.

  • friends at the table

share one page with the people you choose, read together for a while, or answer with a passage from your own shelf. no follower counts, no streaks, no endless scroll — and nothing on your shelf becomes social by default.

submitted to apple in ghostreader 1.1 · not in the current app store build

not ever

the boundaries are part of the product.

two distinctions are easy to blur in a reading app like this one. rather than let you find out later, they are written down.

defined

believability is never evidence. a page that will not tell you what it cannot do has already told you something.

  • ai generation is not offline

in ghostreader 1.1, downloaded epub and pdf originals can be read, searched and bookmarked without a connection. explanations, cross-library answers, new studio artifacts and memory sync still need the network.

  • it doesn’t write in the author’s voice

a model trained to imitate a particular writer is not built. ghostreader quotes an author and points you at the page; the explanation around the quote is plainly the machine’s.

what it does do is show its working: answers are drawn from the books on your shelf, and carried back to the passage they came from, so you can go and check.

the price

two plans, one difference.

kept

the ai is not the paid tier. money changes how many books you may add, and nothing else.
